Technology for the Human Habitat

Studying the use of technology by field biologist gives insight into how to design technology that is accessible to the next hundred million users in sub-optimal environments.

  • New Users in Sub-Optimal Environments

    Carrizo Plains, CA.
As more of the rural world skips several hundred years of technology development and uses cell phones, the appetite for technology to improve the lives of people around the world is increasing. However, much technology is designed and tested in an "office-like" environment, but this broad audience of new potential users will be using equipment in unique climatic, support and user-condition design constraints.

I would like to design technology that fits two aims: 1) of being needed by the user and 2) being designed to function optimally in sub-optimal environments. Applications range from healthcare, to better access to information available on the internet and software applications.

  • Professionals Working in the Field

    Data collection during construction.

Many people work not in offices, but outside, such as the geologist to the right. Use of computer technology in such positions is limited for many reasons, but primarily because the tools were not designed for the field. Designing for these markets will broaden audiences for new devices.
